2010 Technology

The article talks about all the new electric cars that will be releasing in 2010. It also talks about going green with cars and the faces of 2010, which mentions people who are expected to produce some big things in this upcoming year.

I think the big deal about this topic is going green. We should all care about going green and changing the vehicles that move us in order to accomodate the changing environment. By creating new green vehicles we could help with the pollution that regular gas powered cars produce.

They plan to release a lot of new electric cars for 2010 and also to develop many new green technologies.

The biggest obstacle of these new cars are the prices. They are really pricy cars and I don't think that many people would actually want to spend that much for a car if the car that they have is working fine. I think that with the recession it will have a bumpy start but after people figure out that they actually have to change something to create a better environment for future generations.

2010 Entertainment

The topic I read was about how entertainment television is not going to be limited simply to your TV. They also talk about very anticipated movie and game releases like Tron Legacy and Iron Man 2, and also the games Brink and Starcraft II.

I think the big deal about this topic is that since now many people are often on the go, they want to carry things from home with them on the road. But of course they aren't going to carry their 40in TV screens with them everywhere. I think that this will help the economy because this seems like something everyone could really use and also the prices aren't very expensive for the TV services. I care because honestly, I want to watch TV wherever I am.

Throughout the 2010 year there will be new releases that will expand the world of entertainment. Some include cellphones with TV access, TV antennas that hook up to your laptop and also portable TVs. Cellphones that were made previous to the TV access will have an antenna of their own to watch TV wherever.

I think the only obstacle is that it could be coming at a wrong time with the economy but I think that this is only a minor setback and it probably won't get in the way of this product's success.

Semester Goals for Humanities

My first goal for this semester is to play a bigger part in class discussions because in seminars I don't really talk as much as I should so in this next seminar I want to play a big part.

My second goal is to try to incorporate the words of the day into my vocabulary more because Charlotte has told us to try and use them in conversations. I think that it will help me in expanding my vocabulary which is another reason why to do it.

My final goal is to pay attention in class more so I can absorb the information as it's being given to us instead of processing it when I need to use it. I think a way I can do this is by putting away anything that might distract me before class starts.

Time Travelers Pillar Reflection

Project Description:

For this assignment we were assigned a pillar of civilization, the pillars were either religion, tradition, government, and art/architecture. The pillar I got was government and I had to paint something that represents the pillar I was assigned. The picture I chose was a picture of a priestess. I chose this because the priestesses of the Minoan civilization were a big part of their government, they were what made most of the administrative decisions.

Process:
The first thing I did was print out a picture of what I wanted to paint, then I drew it onto the pillar. After that I chose the colors I wanted and then I painted the background, then the main object, and finally the small details.

Reflection:
What I learned from this project was that the
priestesses of Minoa wore their shirts open in the chest area.

The challenge I encountered was finding an image because
some of my teammates could've used my image as well but thankfully I used the picture I wanted.

What I would do different is maybe plan out what I'm goi
ng to draw more, and also bring thin brushes myself because I couldn't do the details with the brushes that we
re available.

I think this will help me later because I know all these facts about civilizations I've never heard of.

Artifact:
My artifact was my painting and this is what I based my image off of.

Semester Goals for Mysics

My first goal for Mysics is to pay more attention in class. The first step I can take to do this is to turn off my phone whenever I go into class and put anything away that could distract me.

My second goal is to ask for help when I need it because most of the times I just don't ask for help. I could take the first step towards this by asking people around me for help and then asking the teacher if they didn't help me.

My final goal is to study for quizzes more because I usually don't study at all for quizzes and sometimes it reflects negatively on my grade. I think I can do this by studying the night before the quiz for at least one hour.

Minoan Government

The Minoan civilization were much like the ideal civilization, they had modern ideas and an amazing government and economy. Even though their history is present to us merely by the buildings they left behind, you can tell how serious they were about their government. Mostly, if not all of the Minoans’ buildings were devoted for governmental and administrative purposes which the women of Minoa were mostly in charge of. However, even though all memory of them is their buildings, these tell the story of how they maintained an amazing social organization up until their last moments of panic.

The Minoans were a Bronze Age civilization. These, like many others remain mostly a mystery to us. Historians don’t know what the Minoans called themselves, however, archeologists Arthur Evans was the first to conceive the term ‘Minoans’. He came up with this word when he learned of the mythical King Minos, the legendary ruler of Minoa. In the Egyptian poem Odyssey it is stated that the Minoans might be the first link in the European chain. This is further supported by the Egyptian Poem, Odyssey, in which it is mentioned that the natives of Crete are the true Cretans, these they believe could have been descendants of the Minoans however, this is not fully confirmed due to the loss of information through the ages.

Although the Minoans’ history is lost to us, historians can still tell much by the structures they left behind. For example, many if not most of the buildings that have been discovered were all used for business-like activities. They have been depicted to be administrative buildings due to the large files that were found inside. These buildings are a great example of amazing architecture, the best that have been excavated in the island of Crete. It is said that Daedulus was the most skillful architect of Crete; he was in charge of most of the Minoan buildings, these are supposed to be the central infrastructure of their governmental system.

When it comes to their government, the Minoans totally dominated. Researchers have proved that their government was a monarchy; the only known ruler of the Minoans is a mythical King Minos. As any civilization, it had its own unique strengths or differences. One of the most interesting things that were presented in the Minoan civilization was the fact that they have no gender inequalities. This was striking because in this time period women were just there to carry sons and care for their husbands, whereas in the Minoan’s community women could be working women. The role of king in the Minoan society was more of a boss-like situation rather than an actual majestic honor, and it was mostly the women working backstage and making the decisions for the Minoans.

The women were the ones who made up most of their government. A priesthood made up of mostly women made most of the decisions that referred to an administration comprised of a web of bureaucrats and scribes. Apart from gender equality, the inhabitants were given a lot of freedom; to balance these amounts of freedom they enforced good social organization. Meaning that the relationships within the community were all respectful and civil. Also, Minoans thrived on their mercantile abilities and the trade of their amazingly rich in culture materials. However, even this amazing-sounding government had its faults.

Being the civil people that were, the Minoans did not believe in having an Army. This, I believe brought upon some negative impacts into their society; because of the fact that they traded with war-like people that could’ve very easily taken over them. Many historians believe that the people with whom they traded the most could’ve been the ones to destroy them. However, this wasn’t the case with the Minoans because their end, historians believe, was caused by a devastating tidal wave. If their government were to be compared to other civilizations, you would just over-look the weakness of their lack of army.

In the beginning the Romans, as well as the Minoans, had a monarchy. After 200 years however, the people of Rome decided they wanted to be a bigger part of the government. Historians aren’t sure as to what the King’s role really was like. He could’ve had, like many other civilizations, huge amounts of power; or like the Minoans he could’ve been part of a bigger picture of power. The Romans had a strong army that received orders only from the King, and these were absolute, the King however, didn’t foresee his economy’s demise.

The Roman economy relied mainly on farming and trade. This is because the Romans had large amounts of land great for agriculture. However, the economy slowly went downhill due to wars and conquests. This made their main source of revenue slave work; the slaves also grew cheaper as the economy got worse. Aside from this, the Romans developed a coinage system that consisted of brass, bronze and other precious metal coins. It was used all throughout the Empire and beyond. The Roman’s government I believe, failed because I think they needed a better economy for the King to have a certain order over the people.

The Spartans and the Minoans were two completely different stories. The men of Sparta were trained from a very young age to be in the army, the Minoans did not have an army. Both the women of Sparta and Minoa were physically fit, like the men. The women of Minoa had large amounts of freedom they could work and do many other things. In Sparta, the women were there to bear the men a son to continue their family chain. However, the women did have power and a lot of respect. They could own their own properties and the properties of men in the army.

Even though this government allowed them to own their own land, they weren’t allowing when it came to freedom in other places. The lives of everyone in Sparta, from birth to death, belonged to the state. Their government was also a monarchy, but the role of the king in Sparta was actually a king-like occupation as opposed to the boss-like occupation of the Minoan kings.

Due to this, I believe that their government was a complete success. In a way, their society is a lot like the ideal society that would achieve world peace. Their society is what many should strive to be like nowadays. Their trading skills gave them a strong economy and their social organization gave them a civil environment in which to live in. It was like a business as opposed to an actual civilization in the fact that everyone behaved very professionally. But, were it not for the natural disaster that may have destroyed them, their lack of army would’ve contributed to their demise.

Like any other civilization, the Minoans had their struggles however I believe that if they had been more prepared for the tidal wave, they would’ve grown to become a strong civilization. This I can say because of the evidence that was provided, and because of the signs of their well oiled way of living, mostly working, together.

Time Travelers Essay Reflection

Project Description:

For the Time Travelers project we had to pick an artifact that we had to send back to our assigned civilization. These artifacts could be a sailboat, a trebuchet or a water filtration system. The purpose of this was to see if sanding it back would help or hinder the civilization. We also had to explore the different aspects of a civilization, like their government, history, culture, and their religion. These were called the ‘Pillars of Civilization’ these were like the building blocks of any civilization.

Process:

To get to the final product I had to go through many drafts. Every time I made a new draft I had someone read over it and tell me how to improve it and then I’d go back to edit my draft until I felt that it was good enough.

Reflection:

I learned what the basic building blocks of a civilization are, I also learned a lot about civilizations that I hadn't even heard of, like the Minoans. I also learned of new ways to improve my writing and how to write a research paper.

Some challenges that I encountered was dedicating enough time to my research paper while still putting time into the other aspects of this project, like building my artifact. I overcame this by working on my paper at home and when I got home focusing only on working on my research paper.

What I would use for future projects would be to manage my time like I did in this project. I think that it will help my organization and would give me a better grade. What I would improve in other projects is to not be lazy and make sure that I get as many people as possible to review my drafts.
